Since I’m on my way to being self sufficient, I decided to try my hand at homemade deodorant and toothpaste. Very simple recipes and tested toothpaste…I just made the deodorant this morning so I’m waiting for it to “dry” to be able to use it after I shower. Ill start with the deodorant…I just used a mason jar and a pot of water instead of messing with a double broiler today. The ingredients are….
Deodorant Recipe 1 – Ingredients
- 3 T Coconut Oil
- 5 T Baking Soda
- 3 T Shea Butter
- Essential Oils (optional) I used Eucalyptus EO
I was going to try it with Lavender EO but read that it can cause a rash under your arm…Not willing to try that one! The original recipe (which I got HERE) called for Arrowroot, which I do not have so I used more baking soda instead. Its really simple process too…
I melted the shea butter and coconut oil in a mason jar, in a pan with water…
Once it was all melted I added the baking soda and the Essential Oil and mixed well…..
Once all combined I poured into a 1/2 pint mason jar and let it cool…Once I shower I will try this and see how it works out and will report back to everyone…If anyone has tried this please let me know your results…I would love to hear how it worked or didn’t work for you…
Now for the tooth paste…
Here is the recipe that I used…I found it (HERE)
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 1 tsp fine sea salt (optional – direct application of the minerals in sea salt is great for teeth, but can be left out if the taste is too salty)
- 1 – 2 tsp peppermint extract or 10-15 drops peppermint essential oil (or add your favorite flavor – spearmint, orange, etc.)
- filtered water (add to desired consistency)
Mix together baking soda, salt and essential oil of your choice, slowly add water till you get the consistency that suits your taste. Be careful with the essential oil that you use. I used to much peppermint and it was REALLY strong..I had to add more baking soda to off set the taste…I put it in a mason jar as well…Now I just need to make sure I use the toothpaste and not the deodorant lol…I will say that with the toothpaste, my mouth felt so much cleaner and fresher using the home made stuff..I wasn’t sure how it would work out but it really does work well….
